Presentation: Concept of Good Life in Indian Context

The good life is one in which what someone does and feels leads to and is constitutive of their fulfillment, also called happiness. Such happiness is neither primarily an experience; nor is it found as a consequence of following moral laws. Instead, happiness is fundamentally an activity: it is the state of the person who is living without hindrance the life that becomes a human being. The good life is the primary source of happiness. Here we will discuss the concept of the good life in the Indian Context.

Lecture on "Why to Study Philosophy at UG Level ?"

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. “The unexamined life is not worth living,” said Socrates, one of our most enduring philosophers and thinkers. Being able to think critically and independently is an important skill that is often taken for granted. The serious study of philosophy as a major can prepare you to excel in any number of distinct, rewarding, and challenging careers. Philosophy is a multifaceted subject that has endless depth and potential to study and learn from for years to come.

(Development of Philosophy & Folk Religion in Haryana)

(Mahatma Gandhi on Modern Civilization: An Overview)

Aristotle on Happiness and the Good Life

Abstract
Aristotle was the last, and the most influential of the Greek philosophers. Aristotle studied philosophy as well as different branches of natural sciences. In fact, he had a keen interest in the world of experience and is the founder of at least two sciences: (1) Logic and (2) Biology. Aristotle’s system of philosophy falls into the fivefold division of Logic, metaphysics, physics, ethics and aesthetics. Aristotle talks about the ultimate good being eudaimonia  – a good life, a flourishing life, a fulfilled and worthwhile life. Reflecting on ideals and connecting them to reality is only the first step in the search for the good life. A For Aristotle the final end of human life is to flourish, to live well, to have a good life. All acts should aim at this end. According to Aristotle, the good life consists in the possession, over the course of a lifetime, of all those things that are really good for us.  Aristotle’s purpose in the Nicomachean Ethics is not just to explain the philosophy of the excellence for human beings but also to demonstrate specifically how human beings can lead lives of excellence as activity in accordance with practical and theoretical reason. The objective of this paper is to study the concept of happiness and the good life according to Aristotle.

Key-Words: Ethics, Aristotle, Happiness, Virtue, Good Life.

(Ethical Leadership in India: Present Scenario and Future)

PUBLIC SERVICE VALUES AND ETHICS IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

Ethics is an attempt to guide human conduct and it is also an attempt to help man in leading good life by applying moral principles. Ethics refers to well based standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues. Ethics is related to issues of propriety, rightness and wrongness. What is right is ethical and what is wrong is unethical. Value is an important conception in ethical discussion. Values relate to the norms of a culture, but they are more global and abstract than norms. In certain cultures norms reflect the values of respect and support of friends and family. Different cultures reflect different values. Over the last three decades, traditional-age college students have shown an increased interest in personal well-being and a decreased interest in the welfare of others. Recently, the department of personnel and training has decided to change the pattern of the Civil Services Examination by stressing more on general studies and aptitude skills. A notification has been issued is this regard. From this year the Civil Services (Mains) will also have a separate paper on “ethics, integrity and aptitude”. The notification for the 2013 exam said the “paper (on ethics, integrity and aptitude) will include questions to test the candidate’s attitude and approach to issues relating to integrity, probity in public life and his problem-solving approach to various issues and conflicts in dealing with society”. There are six major sections (i) Ethics and Human Interfaith, (ii) Attitude, (iii) Emotional Intelligence, (iv) Contributions of Moral thinkers and philosophers of India and World, (v) Public/Civil Service Values and Ethics in Public Administration and (vi) Probity in Governance.   In this paper an attempt is made to describe the values needed in public service sector and ethical principles might use in public administration and related to the V section of this syllabus.
